1、Examination Requirements

Doctoral qualification examinations are required for students in the second year of studies. Each doctoral candidate will write a "preliminary report" in English for his/her research project and submit it to the doctoral dissertation steering group at least 6 weeks before the examination; Candidates should revise the written report based on the evaluation comments and submit it 2 weeks before the test. An oral defense can be conducted with the written consent of the doctoral dissertation steering group. Those who fail to pass the pre-proposal report cannot enter the oral defense. The oral defense format is: candidates will introduce the "pre-opening report" in English for 20 minutes, and the evaluation experts of the doctoral dissertation steering group will ask questions about the "depth" and "breadth". The defense time is generally 60-120 minutes.

2、Exam Schedule:

Oral defense: no later than the end of the spring semester (week 16).

3、Examination evaluation criteria:

The exam obeys the centesimal system. "Pre-opening report" accounts for 40%; Oral defense accounts for 60%. Students who "fail" may take a second qualifying examination in the following year. There are only two exams’ chances for each Ph.D. candidate. Those who pass will get corresponding credits, and those who fail twice will lose the qualification of continuing to study for Basic Medical Sciences doctor and will be diverted.

4、Content requirements of "Pre-proposal Report" :

Students should write in English. The content and format requirements are as follows:

1、The proposal should be organized as the following:

1)A title and an abstract;

2)Specific Aims: please list two to three specific aims; please do not propose experiments you almost or have finished!

3)Background and Significance: give a sufficient introduction of current knowledge DIRECTLY related to your proposed work, point out the significance and raise the key questions to be answered in your study;

4)Preliminary results;

5)Research Plan: please expand each aim, state the rationale of proposed experiments, briefly describe experimental approaches, discuss expected results and alternative outcome and/or hypothesis.

6)References.

2、Format:3000~5000 words (not including reference). Times New Roman, font size 10.5-12; single or 1.25-line spaced;

3、Please check the spelling and grammar carefully before submitting. Otherwise, significant points will be deducted from your proposal if too many spelling and grammar mistakes, which may lead to a failure in the exam.

5、Review panel

3-5 review experts (including members of the doctoral dissertation supervision group other than the supervisor. If there are less than 3 members, at least one expert with doctoral supervisor qualification should be invited; Both on and off-campus). It is suggested that the supervisor should observe the examination defense site, but do not speak or affect the evaluation; And leave the meeting room temporarily during the discussion and scoring of the review experts, he should not participate in the scoring as well.
