Severe heart failure is called "cancer of the heart". Heart transplantation can extend the life of the patient, but the number of donors is extremely limited. For tens of millions of patients with heart failure, it is a drop in the bucket. The "artificial heart" assists the human blood circulation through electromechanical means, and brings hope to the majority of patients with heart failure, and is known as the "jewel in the crown of medical equipment."

Internationally, although tens of thousands of heart failure patients have been implanted with "artificial hearts", due to many factors such as high prices, no products have entered the Chinese market. Domestic independent research and development started about 15 years ago. With the unremitting perseverance and efforts of astronauts, the first national artificial heart HeartCon developed by Aerospace Taixin Technology Co., Ltd. has entered the clinical trial stage in 2020 and is expected to be in the near future. Enter clinical practice in the future, saving the lives of tens of thousands of patients with end-stage heart failure in China.

As a high-end medical device, the biocompatibility of the "artificial heart", the auxiliary state under various physiological and pathological conditions, and the mechanism of the occurrence and development of complications need to be studied in depth. As early as 2016, Tsinghua University School of Medicine has cooperated with Aerospace Taixin Technology Co., Ltd., and has made breakthroughs in artificial heart blood compatibility testing. In October 2018, after a research decision by the leaders of both parties, the joint research center was formally established. At present, the director of the management committee of the center is researcher Han Zhifu of Aerospace Taixin Technology Co., Ltd., the deputy director is chief physician Zhang Mingkui, dean of the First Affiliated Hospital of Tsinghua University, and the executive director is researcher Zhang Yu of Tsinghua University School of Medicine. The center’s advisory team also includes: Academician Zeng Guangshang of the Ministry of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Professor Wu Qingyu, a well-known cardiovascular surgeon from Tsinghua University, and Professor Liu Xiaocheng, a well-known cardiovascular surgeon, Dean of TEDA International Cardiovascular Hospital.
