On August 31, the Tsinghua Medicine 2025 Opening Ceremony and Joint Celebration of Teachers’ Day and Chinese Physicians’ Day was held. Vice President Wang Hongwei attended the event and later delivered the first lecture of the new academic year to all incoming students.

At the ceremony, Wang Hongwei encouraged students to embrace national ideals while remaining grounded, to shoulder the responsibility of serving the country with resilience and integrity, and to demonstrate the compassion and breadth that define Tsinghua Medicine. He urged students to pursue interdisciplinary exploration, venture into uncharted scientific territory, and broaden their perspectives through global engagement, thereby contributing wisdom and strength to the advancement of global health.
Senior Vice-Chancellor of Tsinghua Medicine Wong Tien Yin introduced the development direction of Tsinghua Medicine and encouraged students to build a solid foundation of knowledge and strive to become outstanding medical talents with innovation, global vision, and a strong sense of social responsibility.
Academician Cheng Jing, Chair Professor of the School of Biomedical Engineering, spoke as a faculty representative. Drawing on the traditional Chinese medical principles of “observing, listening, questioning, and palpating,” he encouraged students to take a broad perspective, remain attentive to real challenges, question with courage, innovate continuously, and practice unity of knowledge and action through hands-on work.
Dr. Zhang Xiaoya, Associate Chief Physician of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at Beijing Huaxin Hospital, spoke as a physician representative. As a graduate of Tsinghua Medicine, she emphasized that medicine is not only a science but also a mission.
Student representatives also delivered remarks, including Wang Shuting, a 2025 graduate of Tsinghua University’s 8-year Clinical Medicine MD program; Feng Weimin, a doctoral student from the School of Basic Medical Sciences; Bai Xuguang, a master’s student from the School of Biomedical Engineering; and Zhang Lijing, a doctoral student from the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences. An Zhichen, a 2023 MD student from the Outstanding Clinician Scholar Program, spoke on behalf of continuing students.

Awards Presentation Ceremony
The joint celebration of Teachers’ Day and Chinese Physicians’ Day was also held during the ceremony. The event announced the list of award-winning faculty and recipients of the “Zijing Award” for physicians, with 42 physicians honored. The ceremony also featured a white coat presentation and an oath-taking ceremony for all students and faculty.
Following the ceremony, Wang Hongwei delivered the first lecture of the semester, titled“Studying and Implementing Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, and Striving to Grow into the High-Level Talents Urgently Needed by the Nation.” Starting from Tsinghua Medicine’s mission of serving the country and society, he drew upon the stories of faculty and students to inspire the incoming class to dedicate their talents to the nation and to contribute to society through innovation and commitment.
