Where AI Meets Art: Phase II of Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital Officially Opens

Jun 03, 2025

Imagine walking into a hospital where AI guides your care and art softens the walls—a space where technology meets humanity, and healing is both smart and soulful. On May 28, Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital officially opened its Phase II expansion, adding 500 new beds and raising its total capacity to 1,500. More than just a physical expansion, this milestone redefines modern healthcare—blending intelligent systems, compassionate service, and culturally inspired design to serve up to 10,000 outpatients daily.

Smart Hospital: AI-Driven, Patient-Centered Innovation

As a national leader in smart healthcare, the hospital has built a fully integrated system covering six key areas: smart medicine, smart services, smart management, smart research, smart education, and smart health alliances. The completion of a localized deployment of DeepSeek AI earlier this year is a significant step toward AI-driven patient care.

Patients now benefit from a full suite of mobile and self-service options—appointment booking, medical insurance, diagnostic scheduling, e-invoice collection, medication reminders, remote consultations, and more—all available through a single mobile device or kiosk.

AI-powered services now enhance every step of the patient journey:

  • Intelligent triage systems recommend departments and specialists based on reported symptoms and medical history.

  • Pre-diagnosis dialogue systems simulate physician-patient conversations, generating electronic records before consultations.

  • Virtual care assistants guide patients throughout their outpatient visits with real-time progress updates.

  • Smart wards provide fully digitalized admission and discharge processes, supported by devices such as electronic bedside panels, intelligent infusion systems, predictive alert tools, and mobile nursing stations.

Technology-Assisted Diagnosis and Decision-Making

Clinical departments have embraced intelligent tools to support diagnostic accuracy and efficiency. For instance, the blood bank uses IoT for full-cycle management of blood products; the pathology department applies AI to detect key tumor regions; and radiology relies on AI to identify, classify, and recommend diagnostic actions—greatly accelerating clinical workflows.

Healing with Humanity and Art

As part of China’s national initiative to enhance medical humanism, the hospital has partnered with Tsinghua University Academy of Arts & Design and various public organizations to explore the integration of “art + medicine.” Through participatory design involving both patients and staff, the hospital is creating a "healing with beauty" environment rooted in culture and care.

Hospital spaces are being reimagined to reflect the rhythms of the Chinese 24 solar terms, fusing traditional wellness philosophy with modern aesthetics. With themes like the pulse of life, cultural lineage, and the breath of nature, AI-assisted design is used to co-create a human-centered and emotionally resonant healthcare setting. Dedicated cultural spaces such as art exhibitions, reading corners, and coffee nooks help transform the hospital into a place of warmth, dignity, and shared well-being.

Celebrating Community and Compassion

On opening day, expert teams from over 40 departments participated in a hospital-wide free clinic, exemplifying the institution’s enduring commitment to accessible, high-quality care.

Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital’s Phase II is more than an expansion—it is a vision for the future of medicine where technology serves compassion, space nurtures healing, and culture meets care.
