Interview with Prof Peter Mathieson, Principal & Vice-Chancellor of The University of Edinburgh

“Edinburgh is very old in medicine. Tsinghua University is young and distinguished in engineering and robotics. Together, we are thinking about the same challenges—and can find new ways of working together.”

At the recent Tsinghua Medicine International Advisory Council 2025 meeting, Prof Sir Peter Mathieson, Principal & Vice-Chancellor of The University of Edinburgh, emphasized the power of complementarity:

🔹 Edinburgh’s centuries of strength in medical education and research

🔹 Tsinghua’s leadership in engineering, robotics, and innovation

🔹 Shared ambition to address global health challenges through partnership

On the future of AI in healthcare, he noted:

“It’s all about balance between risks and opportunities.” With over 60 years of AI teaching at Edinburgh, the lesson is clear—students must understand both benefits and risks, keep pace with rapid change, and adapt to the new roles AI will create. AI will not replace people—it will reshape how we work and care for patients.
