Tsinghua University School of Medicine was founded in October 2001. Dr. Jieping Wu, an internationally renowned urologist and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, served as the first Dean. Biophysicist Dr. Nanming Zhao, Structural Biologist Dr. Yigong Shi, Neurobiologist Dr. Bai Lu and Immunologist Dr. Chen Dong subsequently held the helm as the Executive Vice Dean. Dr. Chen Dong became the Dean in 2016, while Dr. Hai Qi served as the Dean since 2020. In June 2023, the University made the strategic decision to revamp the medical education and research enterprise at Tsinghua by establishing Tsinghua Medicine, a new entity of health science ecosystem, that governs four component schools and 3 affiliated hospitals. Professor Wong Tien Yin, an internationally renowned retina specialist and clinical scientist, a member of the Singapore National Academy of Science, and a foreign member of the US National Academy of Medicine, is the Senior Vice Chancellor of Tsinghua Medicine.
