1. Overall situation

The Experimental Animal Center of Tsinghua University (hereinafter referred to as the "Experimental Animal Center") is an experimental animal research platform open to both inside and outside the school. The Laboratory Animal Center has licenses for the use of Laboratory Animals, Production Licenses for Laboratory Animals and Mice in Isolated Environments, and passed the AAALAC international certification in June 2014.

The center adopts the operating mode of "independent operation, unified management, resource sharing, and paid service". The director of the center (Professor Wang Hongwei) is responsible for the development planning of the center, and the executive deputy director (always in) is responsible for daily work and comprehensive management. The Laboratory Animal Use and Management Committee (IACUC) directs the technical services of the Animal Center.

At present, the center has 20 technicians and 36 animal keepers.

2. Representative resources and courses

The first phase of the Experimental Animal Center (west of the northwest gate) was officially put into use in September 2009. The total construction area is nearly 2,900 square meters, equipped with 11,000 mouse cages (IVC), more than 200 rat IVCs, and 120 Open cage for rabbits. In December 2019, the second phase of the Experimental Animal Center (U4 on the second basement of the Biomedical Museum) was opened, with a total construction area ofnearly 4,700 square meters and a total of 33,000 mouse cages (IVC).

The equipment of the center includes: pathological tissue automatic embedding machine, dehydrator and staining machine, cryostat and image acquisition system, 4 sets of Nikon microinjection injection system, X-Ray radiometer, small animal in vivo fluorescence imaging system, Quantum GX Micro-CT imaging system, behavioral energy metabolism test and analysis system, living body fat composition analyzer, etc.

3. Main results

Supported the publication of at least 50 articles in 2019, which were published in Cell, Nature, Science, Nature immunology, Nature communications, Nature Neuroscience, Immunity, JEM, etc.

4. Highlights introduction

After 10 years of development, the center has established a world-class professional technical service system for laboratory animals, including the establishment of laboratory animal feeding and breeding systems, basic operation and aseptic surgical operation training, laboratory animal practitioners’ certificate training, and multiple pathological tissue sections. Dyeing service, Cas9 KO/KI/cKO mouse production, biological purification, use of IVF to rescue mice that cannot be bred and rapid expansion and reproduction, embryo/sperm freezing, etc.
